Follow-up Comment #4, bug #53478 (project octave):

Thank you for your answer, I didn't realize this could be an OpenGL problem.
This is indeed an old computer with OpenGL 1.4/GLSL 1.20

Launching Octave with this works around the problem:

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=true octave


Otherwise, both of your options help a bit, I am not yet sure which is best,
but I'll probably use the software renderer when working on this computer, as
long as the performance is satisfying.

In case anyone has the same problem, here is some more detailed information
