Update of bug #53536 (project octave):

                  Status: None => Works For Me

Follow-up Comment #2:

This works for me. I'm running Mint 18.1 which is based on Ubuntu 16.04. The
stable tip was

parent: 25168:8c38361718a9
 When Variable Editor is tabbed, activate that tab via openvar (bug #53443).
branch: stable
commit: 5588 unknown (clean)
update: (current)

for this test.

I used the code

octave -f --gui

to start the GUI and then

while (1)
  ;
end

After that loop was started I used Ctrl+C to break the loop without problem.
