Follow-up Comment #3:
I found this thread about compiling gnuplot and d2d1
(https://sourceforge.net/p/gnuplot/support-requests/227/). Apparently, in
gnuplot 5.2 they introduced a Direct2D API (with corresponding system code in
d2d1.dll). Windows XP does not have this DLL so it is really just about an
unsupported old OS. Closing report.
