Follow-up Comment #1:

Octave's configure script does check for the suitesparseconfig library:

But there is an error in the logic when an empty warning string is passed to
the OCTAVE_CHECK_LIB macro.  I think the following patch should fix it.

After pushing, I noticed that I wrote OCTAVE_CONFIG_LIB in the commit message
summary line instead of of OCTAVE_CHECK_LIB.  Oops.
