Follow-up Comment #37, bug #54235 (project octave):
That's a feature of how GCC is configured, not of our build system.
Some light googling found me https://stackoverflow.com/a/31521865/384593,
which says
> gcc is compiled by default to use the Solaris linker. You can
> override this setting by using the LD_ALTEXEC environment variable:
