If I understand correctly what you are doing in file #45334
is remove all Preprocessor conditionals in order to force
using the code for sundials, is that the case?

The whole point in the patch is to detect 
automatically the flags to set in order to 
link with SUNDIALS so, if you need to set
the flags manually that means the patch is 
not working.

As I said in comment #25 this part of the 
patch was probably not correct even for SUDIALS 2.
