Follow-up Comment #10, bug #55013 (project octave):

Wow, this is slightly embarrassing.

As jwe suspected, the error was due to my $PATH, specifically due to a typo
that I never noticed before:

export PATH="{$PATH}:/home/rootsquash/.bin"

I have no idea if that's something a program should check for, but I know that
I am quite happy to be able to use octave now, thank you very much!
