Follow-up Comment #2:

As Torsten pointed out, 'ESC' can be bound to whatever you like.  I use
VI-mode with Readline so, for example, 'ESC' is used to switch between editing
mode and command mode and it should *never* be bound to deleting the line.

Could you clarify the second part of the report, "edits shouldn't disable
history".  I don't understand what the desired behavior is.  Normally, one
uses the up-arrow to go backwards in history, edit a command, and then type
return to execute it.  It sounds like you have a different usage pattern.
