Follow-up Comment #22, bug #55765 (project octave):
seems the current function pushed to 8.1 is ok. no complaints at least.
two potential outstanding issues. (1) this version still doesn't preserve
sparseness. (2) there are some matlab incompatibilities due to us not having
had compatible mean, median, std, etc., functions when i wrote this one.
could retitle to keep a placeholder for eventually fixing that. or close and
leave as a later report.
