Follow-up Comment #2:

Afaict, none of the Octave core developers has access to a Mac computer. So,
it might be difficult to track this down if it can't be reproduced on Linux
(or Windows).

Octave seems to run correctly on macOS in the CI on GitHub (using binaries
distributed by Homebrew). E.g.,
https://github.com/gnu-octave/octave/actions/runs/8330260428

Just guessing: Is it some change in Octave that triggered this? Or could it be
the toolchain? Does it still work if you build from an older tarball (e.g.,
for version 8.4.0) with your current toolchain?
