Michael,
   I've been working on a scheme to integrate parallelism into Octave's 
command syntax, i.e. high-level commands, and also support low level 
APIs such as MPI, PVM, and the like. If you want to take a peek, check

at the proof of concept level. If you, or anyone needs help getting this 
version going, or want to discuss the future of this addition, feel free
