Would it make sense to make the next release on the MAIN branch version 2.9.0. The reasoning is that almost all of the features you talked about for version 3 are into the CVS, with the major exception of the private directories stuff. So starting a 2.9.x series indicates that this is starting to get close to a version 3. In that case the 2.1.x branch might continue if need be to allow patches to the testing version and a testing version of 2.9.x wouldn't be needed so quickly. If you release the next unstable release from the MAIN branch as a 2.1.x release you basically prevent any patches to the existing testing release....
