As regards the Debian distribution, this is a highly important problem
that must be fixed as soon as possible. Indeed, the Debian project
decided recently that gcc 4.1 is the default version of gcc for the
upcoming release of Debian:

If the compilation problem reported by Thomas persists, Octave may be
kicked out of Debian. Just for the record: Octave 2.1.73 fails on i386
with gcc-4.1 in the same way.
