The reality is that there are data formats in use already which we would like to access from Octave. (For example I, personally, would like to have an ability to read and write Ggobi (www.ggobi.org) data files which are in XML.) I do not think anyone here proposes XML capabilities just because that is what "all your friends did." The RSXML docs include some design considerations which I thought may be of some use for Octave XML parser. As I mentioned before I would concider the XML parser to be a "middleware" and as such a thin wrapper would be probably the best.
