I haven't tested this yet because I'm waiting for CVS to recompile to 
see if it has been fixed in the recent image and plot changes, but 
printing gnuplot image plots to files had a bit of a strange bug the 
last time I tried it. If you just called the image function and use the 
print function to output to, say test.eps, test.eps would be empty. 
However, if you called the plot function before calling the image 
function, test.eps would have the image plot in it. I was guessing this 
had something to do with initializing some parameter or other that was 
done in the plot routines, but not in the image plotting routines. 
However, with the extensive changes you have made, it might be fixed now.
