Did the start menu folder location change under Vista?
Octave installer created its start menu items in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\GNU Octave 2.9.12-2\ where name "GNU Octave 2.9.12-2" is what I specified in Octave installation. There is no white space in "C:\ProgramData", even though "C:\Program Files" has a space. Olli
