attached is the revamped lookup.cc.
Or would a hg changeset be preferable even in this case? I've noticed
you talking
with David on another thread about mercurial quirks with renaming and
deleting files...

Anyway I tried to follow all (or most) of your code style guidelines.
I got rid of two of the error returns in the main DEFUN, but retained the
third ("table must be a vector") as this specialized message is also
present in the
current m-file. Is that OK?
