there a pause at a particular system call, or is it just that there
are many "slow" system calls (like calling stat on many thousands of
files)?

If you want someone else to look at this, please put it on a web or
ftp server somewhere and post the location on the list since the file
is likely to be quite large and not appropriate for posting to the
list (and I don't really want to see a copy in my inbox either, so
please don't send it directly to me...).
