Eh, adding TeX as dependency would be the end to all kind of usage
pattern:
- using it on small machines (someone posted once about using Octave as
  some kind of portable calculator on a handheld or whatever)
- compiling at least the basic ingredients yourself (TeXLive comes in at
  150 MB, MikTeX's basic installer has something about 80 MB).

Seriously, we can probably add GTK, QT and wxWidgets and still have a
smaller footprint. I mean, 80+MB for rendering a few symbols?
