Or it could be determined at run time that TeX is not available. The
only loss would be that TeX macros would not be properly expanded in
text objects. I don't see that as a big loss, and I certainly don't
see it as a good enough reason to settle for a hacked-up solution that
only does a partial and probably poor job of handling TeX markup.
