Is this still happening?  I see the following:

segfault:899> hg pull
pulling from ssh://hg.sv.gnu.org/octave
searching for changes
no changes found

yeah, it's still happening for me.

Ok, I found the problem. I'd set up my package manager to work through my company's proxy which it can't when I'm not at work :-(
