I am certainly not defending MATLAB, just giving the reason why very few (maybe none) of my colleagues will use octave.

A colleague at my former university group managed to crash Matlab hard
(and repeatable) with 2 lines of code.

When reporting the bug, the first thing I got as reply was a request for
our license number. I still wonder whether Mathworks would have ignored
the bug if I hadn't send in the license number.
