That is likely where the 6 comes from, i.e., 6/72 in (1/12 in) seems a good default

MATLAB also uses a default marker size of 6 and specifies the marker size in 1/72-inch points.  I'm not sure if this was done for MATLAB compatibility but it seems likely.
