Building from scratch under debian.

I have an up-to-date debian distribution.  I am trying to build octave 
from the tip but have not been successful recently.

It is probably just something I am missing in the build process - 
something that has changed recently.

So, could somebody please tell me the exact sequence of commands 
necessary to build octave from a freshly cloned, clean source 
directory?  A link to such a sequence would be just as good of course.
