And if you're really that concerned about the quality of your B&W images
you should be choosing the scheme for conversion rather than relying on
the unknown default in the print routine.
This GIMP tutorial shows 6 different methods for conversion:

As Michael highlighted, with the color image you have all the
information and you can run multiple conversions until you get the right
look, but if you start with BW you're out of luck.
