what happened to surface plotting?

what happened to surface plotting? |

With the current sources, I am seeing unexpected results for
"sombrero" with the gnuplot backend as in the attached image. What
happened? It looks like points are being plotted with markers. I was
expecting a smooth surface. Can someone please fix this?
