Well it's great that at least that much is in place for a future release.
Thinking about it, most packages don't have any dependencies so it should be
ample for now.

When I do have some spare time I think I will do what one person mentioned,
which is make a script to download and install all extra packages to create
a "complete" distribution.

This feature is useful at least for me. I typically install the same small
set of packages when I compile and install a new Octave version.
This allows me to auto-download the packages from the web instead of keeping
tarballs around.

You still have a chance to implement whatever you want. Feel free to replace
all my code by something more powerful, make a patch and propose it.
