No, really, is the idea to produce an eps first for any kind of plot
and then convert that to other formats?
Not necessarily. But, particularly for printing or use in other
systems, like TeX, this seems like the right thing. And, for
formats that require conversion tools, like ghostscript, this
is the best path that I know of.
And, this is what the gnuplot backend does now anyhow.
