Due to Apple's approach to gcc based mixed 32bit and 64bit toolset, building is 
rather tricky.

For reference, I've documented what I've done to build Octave on MacOS 10.6.4.

I'm not familiar with what you refer to when you wrote "I managed to install 
nix". Can you explain?
