It seems like such functions have value, but should be in a "toolbox" rather than in the main tree.

I think there are a bunch of functions in the main tree that were written by
Kurt Honick in order emulate R/SPLUS.  For the most part, I think they should be
obsolesced, or rewritten to throw errors pointing toward the more conventional
MATLAB approaches.
