problem with autoconf

Hello,
I'm trying to build the latest octave from the mercurial repository. Target
platform is a i686-Fedora13 linux machine. Both autoheader and autoconf fail
with
error: you must have libtool 2.2.2 or a more recent
wich comes from config.ac:
ifdef([LT_INIT], [], [ errprint 

problem is that libtool is available, version 2.2.6; and inside
autom4te.cache, the file 'requests' gives
'LT_INIT' => 1

Any hint ? I'm using the standard build procedure instead of Fedora specific
rpm-based build.
