It appears that it is not gl2ps's fault.  I found where gl2ps-renderer
does an fclose().  It happens as:
octave:1> plot(1:20)
octave:2> print ('gl2ps_t1x.pdf','-dpdf')
gl2ps file closed.

So, the place where things go wrong is the .ps to .eps conversion.
Does gs do this?
