Figure [1] clearly looks like that it was generated using the fltk backend.
But as I said before I see with a recent tip and the fltk backend
non-rotated contour labels only. And when looking at the code in
gl-render.cc (opengl_renderer::render_text) I see only the handling of
the special cases 0,90,180,270 degree rotation. Those work here fine.
So, where is the code for the general case of rotated text and the
opengl_renderer?

Can anybody shed some light on this?
When rendering the demo to the screen I do not see any rotation of the
labels. However, when I print to a PNG file the labels are rotated. Have
you tried printing the figure to a PNG file and looked at the results?

No I have not. But looking at the printed file I see rotated labels too now. Thanks for clearing this up!
