What really worries me is that people might complain about things like
QtOctave not looking exactly like Matab's own interface, hence not
compatible.

Would that happen frequently?

I don't think this is a "compatibility" issue. Describing such examples as being "inconsistent", rather than "incompatible", is a better fit.

I'm confident that some individuals will complain about inconsistencies, but such instances will carry much less weight than compatibility problems.
