We benchmarked some Fortran code about a year ago that was agonizingly slow 
when compiled using gcc/gfortran from Cygwin versus the same code compiled with 
MinGW. Something about cygwin.dll. If you can compile it using MinGW, it's 
always better to do so, I believe.
