clim property values?

I've spent a few hours looking over how the clim property for the axes is 
determined for climmode == "auto".

Thus, far I can't figure it out ... perhaps due to my lack of proficiency with 
c++.

Can someone give point me toward the code that determines clim for an axes 
object when climmode == "auto"?
