Are these functions relevant anymore? It seems that they were an attempt
to implement the corresponding C functions, but for user programs rather
than system libraries. However, there has been no uptake and the only
function which works with them is fsolve. They aren't used in the code
base at all as I verified by removing them completely and running 'make check'.
