It breaks my GNU/heart that you would even consider comparing Emacs to
pico... when some people say that Emacs is an OS... they are sort of
not joking. Sacha Chua is a very good Emacs ambassador:

But Emacs has a steep learning curve. Yes, Emacs's octave-mode can
already communicate very well with Octave, including "highlighting"
(but many of my fellow students of Emacs would prefer to not use
transient-mark-mode, or "highlighting" as the gentiles call it) and
sending that to the Octave process. And it's easy to use, assuming you
are already typing in Emacs's holy name. But that's a big assumption.
I have not witnessed first-hand many people going through the process
of accepting Emacs into their hearts, but the few I have, the going
was always rough at first. Others will never come to the Emacs side.
And it is for those people that Octave should have a built-in GUI.
