JWE,
The attached file is an even more compact test for a bad version of
ARPACK. For my setup it fails immediately with octave3.0, octave3.2.3, and
octave3.2.4 using a flawed external ARPACK library. It passes without
problem on octave3.4.3 and the current release candidate.
