Quick comment from my phone.

I'd like to include Phillip's strread patch (bug 34734).

Theres a MacOS fix for 34720 which also works for me on Ubuntu (or it did a 
while back). My impression is that there is a problem on some Linux systems (?).

I'll reply again later after I verify it's still working for me.
