I'm a graduate student of applied mathematics and modelling, and
theoretical physics. We were taught Matlab in some early lectures,
and since I'm a free software advocate, I used GNU Octave instead.

I use it frequently for all kinds of numerical calculations (except
where I use Fortran 2003 or C++ for really performance critical stuff
- -- but I've also already used Octave for the "outer" routines and
implemented "inner" calculations via oct-files), both in mathematics
and physics, and both for university courses and my bachelor's theses
as well as my master's thesis in mathematics at the moment. The
physics one will come after that and I'm not yet sure what I'll do,
but if it seems like an appropriate tool, I'll also use Octave there.

Cheers,
Daniel
