1) What is the source of performance discrepancy in Matlab/Octave runs?

2) What we can do for Octave become faster?

Maybe it's a good idea to enumerate the main issues that slows down the Octave performance? From trivial ones like C++ bad uses to Octave internal API misunderstanding. There is some link where i can find such a list of possible performance improvements?
