Probably fear of change mostly!

Also I suppose the numbers are changing so rapidly they convey no useful
infomation, so it's just a sort of flickering distraction in the corner.
Purely a matter of taste I suppose, unless this updating actually uses
up many CPU cycles.

That is a good point. There is a sort of right or good frequency for human comprehension. Too slow makes one anxious. Too fast is a bit like being hypnotized by the Matrix screen saver.
