Just a thought, because I use MATLAB at work. How hard would it be to make Octave use "end" instead of "endif", "endwhile", "endswitch", etc? I think that the MATLAB incompatibilities are what is preventing Octave from taking over the science/engineering programming market.

Did you tried to use `end' in GNU Octave? Because it works just fine.
