Maria,

If your not interested in helping in development of Octave, then I suggest you 
install Octave via a Package manager.  Fink is a good choice.  Other options 
are MacPorts and Homebrew.

If you choose Fink, Octave's packages may also be installed using the Fink 
package manager.
