I can see this working for the GUI with the default setting as --no-gui, but
right now there appears to be no way to have the JIT compiled but off by default.
A JIT expert needs to say if this is possible, or worth doing. Currently, I use
2 separately compiled systems: both aliased for --no-gui and one with JIT
on and the other with JIT on.  So far, this has worked since either the JIT system
works, and gets correct answers, or it crashes.  But this is not suitable for a
release system.
