That should happen during ./configure, not during .autogen.sh, or have I 
got that wrong?

It might be that hg clone and git do work on my MinGW system - it 
occurred to me that it was Mandriva 2010.2 (on that same multiboot 
machine) had too old a git version, not MinGW.
Anyway, until Monday I have no more time to look into it.
