Ben,

Instead of

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/bin

try

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386

Once JAVA_HOME was established I needed to re-run configure and then
finally run make.

p.s. Or you can go with the expedient of putting in a symlink directly in
/usr/include directly to jni.h wherever it is located.  This was what Dan
was suggesting.
