I just built the classdef branch on Ubuntu 12.10 using the commands below.

        export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386
        ./bootstrap
        ./configure --enable-jit
        make -j2

Previously I had done something like the below the install all the needed 
dependencies.

        sudo apt-get build-dep octave3.6
