I hadn't even noticed the interperter property was present for line, patch, and surf.

Glancing at the changeset above, suggest that jwe or Michael may know the history.


This doesn't ring any bell to me. But a wild guess: given the position of the new properties, after the "keylabel" property, this might be related to how legend is implemented in the gnuplot backend, and the interpreter property actually refers to the text objects in the legend.
